Marcel van Gils

Marcel van Gils is senior strategy consultant at Strategy Works, an international strategy consulting and coaching firm, specialized in facilitating boardroom decision-making and guiding companies through processes of strategic renewal (www.strategy-works.com). He is also lecturer in strategy at the Strategy Academy, an international research and training company, dedicated to improving companies’ competences in the areas of strategy, leadership and business innovation (www.strategy-academy.org). Marcel studied Social Geography & Spatial Planning at the University of Utrecht with a  graduation in Mainportplanning Relevant courses: Transport Geografie (Utrecht), Port Economics (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam), Airport and Airline Economics (University of Amsterdam). Marcel did scientific research into the spatial vision and decision-making with regard to the spatial development of the ports of Rotterdam, Hamburg and Antwerp. Research funded by the Dutch national research program TRANsition Towards Sustainable Mobility (TRANSUMO). The port authority of Rotterdam did also fund half of this research.  The research was embedded within the capacity group Complex decision-making and the Management of Processes within the department of Public Administration Faculty of Social Sciences within the Erasmus University Rotterdam.  From 2004 untill 2007 Marcel was also involved in the research project Transport at the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. This project was partly managed by Marcel van Gils, who was also responsible for acquiring the funds. Output of the research are several articles and papers . Two working conferences were organised about the long-term spatial future of the Dutch mainports (Rotterdam and the airport Schiphol).  Professional experience was also developed while being involved in four spatial projects related to the port of Rotterdam, three in Hamburg and one in Antwerp. Theoretically the research was founded on principles from public administration and spatial planning on complex decision-making and governance capacity. Insights from complexity theory were added to these. The research was presented at different international and national scientific conferences and working conferences with actors in the spatial practice. In his spare time Marcel is active in cycling, snowboarding and is the goal keeper of a local Dutch soccer team. He also likes to travel.
